Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing

EMDR was discovered in 1987 by Francine Shapiro and is now used to treat PTSD and Complex PTSD with good results.

Symptoms of Complex PTSD can include high anxiety that may not respond to other forms of treatment or where other treatments are only partially successful, depression symptoms and physical manifestations of stress.

Often when we go through difficult experiences, sometimes over a long period of time, the brain does not get the opportunity to healthily process what has happened. Therefore it can get “stuck” which can lead to us feeling like we are continually on high alert or over-reacting to everyday circumstances.

EMDR is thought to work by linking up the parts of the brain needed to healthily process the original difficult experiences or trauma.
